Food and water: In the wild Giant cave roaches are scavengers that look for decaying plant material, fallen fruit, bat guano, seeds, and carrion. In captivity, they do really well on prepared diets like our Luxor Reptiles Cockroach Food, with fresh fruits like bananas and papaya added to supplement their diet. A lot of their hydration should come from their food, however, we like to keep a small dish of water crystals available at all times, as well as mist their enclosure twice a week to ensure proper hydration.
Care and breeding: Keep your roaches in a well-ventilated, dark container. We like using 50-gallon blue Sterilite bins, with (4) 4-inch round vents on the lid. Add 1-2 inches of humid substrate containing leaves and rotting wood (our bioactive isopod substrate works great). Nymphs will spend the majority of their time buried in the substrate to feel secure. Offer a variety of climbing opportunities for adults and nymphs (this is especially important for nymphs molting into adults, they need somewhere verticle to hang from to dry their wings, as well as escape other pestering nymphs during their fragile transition). Cork rounds are a fantastic option. Temperatures should be kept around 70-85°F. Humidity should be kept around 40-60% this can be achieved in dryer climates by lightly misting the enclosure 1-2 times per week. This species prefers to not be overcrowded, if all the above conditions are met, they should breed well. Keep in mind, this isn't a fast-growing or breeding species, patience will always be necessary.
