Arguably the holy grail of roach keepers, the emerald roach is an extremely rare and notoriously difficult species to breed. Our breeding stock has been legally obtained from a local hobbyist.
Food and water: In captivity, they seem to do well on a bee pollen centered diet. We offer bee pollen at all times, supplemented with fresh fruits and our Luxor Reptiles Cockroach food. A lot of their hydration should come from their food, however, we like to keep a small dish of water crystals available at all times, as well as mist their enclosure twice a week to ensure proper hydration.
Care and breeding: This species loves to climb and seems to be diurnal, we keep them in clear plastic bins with a weatherproof gasket to prevent small nymphs from escaping. We add two circular vents to the lid with about an inch of vaseline surrounding the vent. This species needs good ventilation and doesn't do well with stuffy stagnant air, keep this in mind when choosing a container and ventilation. Add 1-2 inches of humid substrate containing leaves and rotting wood (our bioactive isopod substrate works great). Offer a variety of climbing opportunities for adults and nymphs (cork rounds are a fantastic option). Temperatures should be kept around 75-85°F. Humidity should be kept around 40-60% this can be achieved in dryer climates by lightly misting the enclosure 1-2 times per week. Adult males are short-lived, usually only living 5-7 months after maturing. Females will usually live twice as long. so it can be important when trying to establish a productive colony to start with as many roaches as possible to ensure you have mature males and females at the same time. Adult females have a gestation of 1.5-2 months when optimal care is provided. Gestation periods can be doubled or tripled if kept too cool, too humid, not given enough ventilation, or fed improperly. each litter can contain 18-20 nymphs, which can take 10-13 months to mature depending on care conditions. Newborn nymphs hang on to the underside of their mothers until their first molt.
